Quit Nicotine forever

It is official. I am off tobacco and nicotine. I have been using the 0mg cartridges all week with no problems at all.

That is it... I am a NON-SMOKER!!!

Just over 2 months with Clean Smoke USA.

Cutting down on nicotine

Electronic cigarette cartridges come in a variety of flavors and strengths of nicotine. When starting out, you need to determine your nicotine needs and where to start. Green Smoke offers the following guidelines:

Greensmoke 16mg= comparable to the amount of nicotine in unfiltered cigarettes

Greensmoke 8mg = comparable to the amount of nicotine in a Marlboro Red

Greensmoke 6mg = comparable to the amount of nicotine in a Marlboro Light

Greensmoke 4mg = comparable to the amount of nicotine in a Marlboro Ultra Light or Virginia Slim

Greensmoke 0mg = no nicotine at all, but still the tobacco flavor!

Even though I smoked light cigarettes, I decided to start off at the 8mg level. I have heard from others that people usually make the transition a little easier if they start at a higher level. The 8mg did seem to work great for me. I had no real cravings.

But, it is now time to start cutting back. I spent about one month on the 8mg cartridges. I wanted to make sure my new habits were embedded strongly in my mind.

I ordered 10 days worth of 6mg cartridges and 10 days of 4mg cartridges. I have been on the 6mg's for about a week now and the transition is going smoothly. Still no cravings.

I can't wait till I am using my 0mg cartridges. Being tobacco free and nicotine free will be a great feeling.

34 days without a cigarette!!!

Three weeks to form a new habit

Experts say that it takes three weeks to form a new habit. Books have been written about this magic three week mark and I remember studying it in my many college psychology classes. It has something to do with how the brain works and how it stores information. I just don't remember the details.

Anyway, as I am typing this, I am nine minutes away from hitting the three week milestone. Three weeks ago my Green Smoke starter kit came in the mail and I put down that pack of cigarettes for the last time.

Overall, it has been pretty easy. I have had no real problems. I have learned to use my electronic cigarette properly and am getting the most out of it. By the way, I am working on a video on the proper usage of the Green Smoke Electronic Cigarette. It seems the learning curve is what is throwing off most new users and causing them to give up. I will post it here when I get it done.

So here's to me. Three weeks without a cigarette and going strong!!! Thanks Green Smoke and Clean Smoke USA.

Two Weeks and No Cigarettes!!!

It has been two weeks since my starter kit came in and I haven't touched a cigarette since.

Ordering your electronic cigarette starter kit

When you check out all of the E-cigarette sites out there on the internet, you will see they offer you a "starter kit" containing everything you need to try out your E-smoking experience. This is definitely where you want to start. Don't try to piece everything together yourself. You might end up buying parts that are not compatible and will almost always spend more money.

Depending on the brand you select, the starter kits can range from about $50.00 to $200.00. As you can see, this is a pretty big range. There are many similar products in the $50.00-75.00 range. These products are probably interchangeable, same product with different brand names. The choice of brand is yours. The kits all come with approximately the same goods.

Most starter kits will contain the following:

Battery or Batteries- The battery is the long, white part of the cigarette. Some kits may only come with one battery. In my opinion you really should have two. Green Smoke has a cheaper starter kit called the Social Smoker Kit. It contains one battery. If you want your e-cigarette for going out to a bar on Saturday nights and would only use it 3-4 times a night, then this would be acceptable. But, if you smoke regularly, you will need two batteries. The secret to getting a lot of vapor when you inhale is having a good, strong battery. So it is a good idea to have one charging while you use one.

Atomizer- This is the device that makes the vapor. Basically, it goes between the battery and the cartridge. Most kits come with one atomizer. In most brands this will need to be cleaned and eventually replaced according to the manufacturers suggestions. In Green Smoke the atomizer is part of the cartridge and is thrown away when the cartridge is done.

Cartridges- Most E-cigarette starter kits will come with about five cartridges. Cartridges can come in a variety of flavors and strengths of nicotine. Don't expect a wide variety in your starter kit. You will probably just get tobacco flavored in a medium to high nicotine strength. My suggestion- also order a sample cartridge pack with your starter kit. The Green Smoke sample pack contains Marlboro, Menthol, Vanilla, Coffee and Chocolate. I was able to learn right away that I like the sweet ones and the tobacco and coffee flavors did nothing for me.

Charging Unit- Electronic cigarettes need to be charged to work. The charging is mostly done through a USB charger. You can recharge your batteries by plugging them into the USB port on your computer, or by plugging the USB charger into a home wall charger or even a car charger. The car charger won't come with your starter kit. I picked mine up at a discount store for a great price. Look around. You should be able to find one.

After you get started with your electronic cigarette starter kit you will figure out what you will want to add. I figured out my favorite flavors of cartridges, I bought the car charger and I also ordered a USB Electric Cigarette. This is not a battery. It plugs straight in to a USB port (or home outlet or car charger) for immediate use. It never needs to be charged and never goes "empty" on you. I use this while sitting at my computer or while driving the car. That way my batteries will last longer.

Will Electronic Cigarettes work for you?

So, the most important question of all. Will using an electronic cigarette help you quit smoking?

I wish I could say that we will all be successful in this endeavor. But, the truth is, it is up to the individual. You have to be ready to quit. You have to be willing to sacrifice a little. You have to be open to a new experience. For me, the electronic cigarette was the closest thing I was going to get to actually smoking. Now I just needed to work with what I was given.

Here is my analogy. It is like "veggie burgers". Whenever the subject of veggie burgers comes up someone will always say, "It doesn't even taste like a real hamburger." To which I reply, "Neither does chicken, potatoes, steak or anything else." Because they are shaped like hamburgers, are served on a bun with ketchup, mustard and mayo just like a hamburger and are in the "burger" section of the menu, some people expect it to be exactly like a real hamburger.

Instead, if it was looked at more realistically, as a healthy alternative that may be slightly different but will fill you up, taste pretty good and add years to your life, the differences seem minor and pretty easy to overcome.

I think the success of a Electronic Cigarette customer depends on two things. 1) Education by the company and the seller. Being honest about these differences will lead to more success. And 2) The willingness of the customer to accept the changes to achieve their long term goal. For me, I was very ready to quit. I knew in the first day I was going to be able to handle the differences. I have not touched a "regular" cigarette since my starter kit showed up.

Why I chose Green Smoke electronic cigarettes

First off, I want to say this. I chose Green Smoke and I have not tried any other brand of Electronic Cigarette. I will explain my reasons for choosing Green Smoke. I am not putting down any other brands. I have never tried them and have no right to put them down.

Green Smoke has a patented 2 piece design. With the standard 3 piece electronic cigarette there is more work involved. The atomizer is reused until it wears out. You then refill your cartridges with a liquid nicotine mixture. With Green Smoke, the atomizer and cartridge are one piece and disposable after its use. The 3 piece atomizer also has to be cleaned periodically. Now, call me lazy, but the Green Smoke, 2 piece system just seemed easier.

What is the drawback? Green Smoke does cost a little more than some other Electronic Cigarettes. Green Smoke makes no apologies for this. There are two main reasons their cigarettes cost more. First is the disposable cartridges. The second is quality control.

Green Smoke prides itself in selling a product that works. That was important to me. Electronic Cigarettes are mostly made in China. If you have seen the news the past several years you know there have been some problems with companies trying to get low-cost products from China. Green Smoke has been very diligent about keeping up its quality control standards on all of its products. This cost time and money. I am okay with that.

I am willing to pay a little more for the convenience of the 2 piece system and the confidence that the product will work when it arrives at my home.

What are E Cigarettes?

From Wikipedia:

An electronic cigarette or "e-cigarette" is a battery-powered device that provides inhaled doses of nicotine by heating a nicotine-chemical solution into a vapor. It is an alternative to smoked tobacco products, such as cigarettes, cigars or pipes. In addition to nicotine delivery, this vapor also provides a flavor and physical sensation similar to that of inhaled tobacco smoke, while no tobacco, smoke, or combustion is actually involved in its operation.

Okay, now in plain English. It is a device that looks and feels like a cigarette. But what you get when you inhale is basically steam, nicotine and flavoring. No tar, carcinogens, carbon monoxide. No second hand smoke or bad odors. Since many levels of nicotine are available, you can slowly lower your nicotine intake over time.

So, when you use your Electronic Cigarette, you are going through all the same motions you would when smoking a regular cigarette. You just aren't filling your body and the air around you with smoke and harmful chemicals.

This is why I chose this method to quit. I still got to take my puffs. I just wasn't getting harmed by them.

I knew I would be quitting smoking soon

One thing I have learned is that it will be impossible to quit smoking cigarettes unless the person really wants to quit. I have tried many times using many methods. Gum, Chantix, patches, cold turkey, you name it. All with no success. Because deep down I didn't want to quit.

This time was different. I should have seen it coming. There wasn't one big event in my life that made me want to quit. I guess it was just a lot of little things. Getting older, marrying a younger woman and wanting to be around for her, starting a new sports activity (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) and Florida adding a new tax to cigarettes just to name a few. But I was just starting to get fed up with the whole thing.

One thing I noticed is that I no longer cared what brand I was smoking. I was just walking into the store and saying, "Give me a carton of your cheapest cigarettes." Even then, I would sometimes get full flavor, sometimes lights and sometimes ultra lights. It just didn't matter to me anymore.

Yep, the times were changing. And so was my desire to keep smoking.
